Solar Hot Water Rebates
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
The Federal Government's Small Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) is designed to assist households to save money on power bills and reduce their carbon emissions.
The Scheme is available to help eligible home-owners, landlords or tenants to replace their inefficient electric storage hot water systems with a solar or heat pump hot water system. Eligible households can claim a rebate of $1,000 for a solar hot water system ordered and purchased on or after 20 February 2010.
Key criteria for eligibility is:
- Rebates are only available to people who have not previously received assistance to install ceiling insulation through the Home Insulation Program or the Homeowner Insulation Program at this address.
- The system must replace an existing electric storage hot water system.
- An owner-occupier, landlord or tenant can apply for the rebate as long as the dwelling where the hot water system is installed is a principal place of residence.
- The system must be installed and certified by a suitably qualified person (for example an electrician and/or plumber).
SolarSave will provide you with all the documentation you need to claim the rebate if eligible.
NOTE: All applications must be lodged within 62 days of having a system installed.

NEW SOUTH WALES GOVERNMENT
The NSW State Government has a $300 rebate available for the installation of a new gas, solar or heat pump hot water system.
To be eligible for the rebate you must:
- Replace an existing electric hot water system
- Install the system in a residential property in NSW
- Purchase the hot water system between 15 January 2010 and 30 June 2011
- Have the system installed by a NSW licensed plumber
- Your new solar hot water system must be eligible for at least 20 STCs.
Hot water systems installed to comply with BASIX (the Building Sustainability Index), for new homes and major renovations are not eligible for a rebate.
There is a limit of one hot water system rebate per property.

Small Scale Technology Certificates (STCs)
The purchase of a solar water heater (SWH) may entitle you to Small Scale Technology Certificates (STCs). These STCs are normally assigned to the installer of your new system in exchange for a cash consideration or point of sale discount. The amount of STCs depends on the size and type of tank and also the zone where the system will be installed.
